TCOYD Roots

TCOYD is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 charitable organization dedicated to educating and motivating people with diabetes and their loved ones to take a more active role in their own health and to provide continuing diabetes education to medical professionals to better care for their patients.

Mission Statement

Guided by the belief that every person with diabetes has the right to live a healthy, happy, and productive life, Taking Control of Your Diabetes educates and motivates people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition and provides innovative and integrative continuing diabetes education to medical professionals caring for people with diabetes.

National Conferences

TCOYD conferences and health fairs are unique and unlike other diabetes-related events. We focus on the importance of diabetes education and self-advocacy when it comes to your condition. Our conferences and health fairs bring together people with diabetes and those at risk with national and local medical professionals and diabetes related experts for a day of highly informative and motivating programs that empower our participants to take control of their diabetes.

What to expect from a TCOYD conference and health fair:

  • Inspiring and motivating lectures from renowned speakers
  • Health screenings, such as glucose, cholesterol, A1C tests and foot exams
  • One-on-one conversations with diabetes specialists including physicians, diabetes educators, dietitians, psychologists, exercise specialists, , podiatrists, pharmacists and ophthalmologists
  • Our lively, one-of-a-kind health fair with exhibits from national and local diabetes-related companies and organizations and physical activities for everyone
  • Healthy, sit-down banquet lunch with an inspirational keynote speaker at most locations. In some venues we may not have the speaker, but a good lunch is always included.

Mini Series

For those living with diabetes and their loved ones who live in San Diego, you have the unique opportunity to experience the TCOYD San Diego Mini-Series lectures. Here, in TCOYD's backyard, a team of medical professionals will once again volunteer their time to provide a series of evening lectures held on certain Wednesday nights throughout the year.

Hosted by Dr. Edelman, Mini-Series topics cover an array of important issues as they relate to people with diabetes such as heart, kidney, tooth and gastrointestinal health, hormones, weight loss, supplements and alternative medicines.

Continuing Medical Education

TCOYD Continuing Medical Education programs offer a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between patient and professional diabetes education. These programs are held in tandem with our TCOYD patient education conferences, on the same day and in the same location. One goal of these activities is to educate caregivers about the most effective cutting-edge strategies to help patients with diabetes reach their treatment goals and avoid the associated acute and chronic complications associated with poor control of the disease. The other goal is to expose providers to people with diabetes in a way that allows them to make the connection between clinical lessons in the classroom and real life patient experiences. The ultimate goal is to improve the relationships and communication skills between patients and their providers.

Television Series

TCOYD-TV, featuring Dr. Edelman, is our highly acclaimed series airing on educational access cable channels that focuses entirely on diabetes. Dr. Edelman engages in in-depth conversations with other diabetes professionals and people living with diabetes, covering a variety of timely and cutting-edge topics.

Latino Programs

Each year, TCOYD holds several conferences and mini-series sessions for our Latino diabetes communities. These one-of-a-kind events bring together Spanish-speaking diabetes experts with Latinos to educate and empower them to take control of their diabetes and live a healthy life with their condition.

These programs are held entirely in Spanish and feature topics such as diabetes treatments, stress management, proper diet and exercise as well as health fairs, screenings and one-on-one advice from diabetes professionals.

Extreme Diabetes Makeover

Extreme Diabetes Makeover (XDM) is our groundbreaking online reality-based series that is showing the non-diabetic world what it is really like to live with diabetes, and is a comforting eye-opener for the millions of people who are living with diabetes and seeing that they really aren’t alone.

XDM is available for viewing on TCOYD.org. It is also showing on RealAge.com, a top-of-the-line consumer health website. XDM follows seven people with diabetes, two with type 1 and five with type 2, who worked with a “Dream Team” of diabetes professionals, assisting them in their journey to take control of their diabetes and change their habits. Spend a few minutes getting to know Celeste, Chet, Daron, David, Liz, Renee and Tim. We think you will love them, just like our TCOYD Team does!
