Known as one of the leading strikers in the world, Didier Drogba of the Ivory Coast is poised to lead his FIFA World Cup team to multiple victories. Along with his incredible talent, Drogba possesses something just as extraordinary—his heart.
He decided to take action by donating three million pounds in sponsorship fees to build a new and improved hospital in the Ivory Coast. The center will provide approximately 150-200 beds catering to children and adults and boast some of the country’s top doctors, where the treatment of diabetes will be a main focus. A friend of Drogba’s said, “It means the world to him to help those less fortunate than him back home. He has earned millions from his professional footballing career and he thinks it is time he gave something back.” Now that is quite a win for people living with diabetes! Be sure to tune in for the FIFA World Cup on ESPN and ABC through the month of June and catch Didier Drogba in action! |

In November of 2009, Drogba witnessed first hand the flaws in the healthcare system in his country. “When I visited a hospital in Abidjan this year, I was shocked by the terrible conditions. We hear about all the incurable diseases, but these kids are just as likely to die from diabetes because there is no insulin available,” said Drogba.
