Vermont Native Ginger Vieira Seeks to Help People Live in Progress with Their Diabetes

vieira_ginger.gifFor Ginger Vieira, being able to find a balance between controlling her diabetes and being successful in her power-lifting career isn’t weighing her down. In fact, the 24 year old, who holds 14 national drug-tested powerlifting records and is the 2-time winner of the Vermont State Bench Press with a record lift of 190 lbs, has been living well with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease for 11 years and has many great ideas to improve the lives of people living with chronic illnesses.

Ginger’s recent project, “Living in Progress,” provides a unique form of support and coaching, dedicated to helping people with chronic illnesses (including people with diabetes) effectively integrate goals and small lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise into their daily lives. Vieira’s goal-setting tactics also incorporate a cognitive-based method of coaching that works with the neuroplasticity of the brain to create a different and more positive way of thinking about one’s own condition. Her training is primarily through David Rock’s ResultsCoaches.com worldwide coaching program.

Vieira developed the idea for the program from her own experiences living with diabetes and by listening to the diabetes community. Realizing all of the various obstacles for people living with chronic diseases, Vieira found that everyone has challenges—how you overcome them is what determines your progress.

“It is crucial to fine-tune our way of thinking when it comes to controlling a disease. I try to help my clients build new ways of thinking that enables them to take the next step in improving their condition. Instead of trying to erase old habits or thinking, we build new ones on top of it. I try to help them realize what they already know and the steps they can take to become more proactive in dealing with their disease,” says Vieira.

Launched June 14th, this program is available to anyone who wishes to evaluate their approach to living with chronic illnesses and make a new and positive change in their behavior.

Vieira’s program is open to any individual across the country, whether by phone or face-to-face. Candidates include those who seek to manage weight loss, nutritional habits, stress management, coping skills and more.

Vieira has worked with many clients who have diabetes and serves as both a mentor and an advocate to those who struggle with the disease.
