TCOYD and DiabetesSisters Announce the Weekend for Women Conference PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 06 October 2009

Taking Control of Your Diabetes, 501c(3) (TCOYD) a San Diego-based not-for-profit diabetes education organization, is pleased to partner with DiabetesSisters, to host the first Weekend for Women conference on the evening of May 22nd (immediately following the Raleigh TCOYD Conference & Health Fair) and go through Sunday afternoon, May 23rd.

The Weekend for Women Conference will take place at the Marriott City Center in downtown Raleigh, NC.

TCOYD (www.tcoyd.org ) and DiabetesSisters (www.diabetessisters.org ) are nationwide non-profit organizations with similar missions of motivating and educating people with diabetes.  The TCOYD team met DiabetesSisters executive director Brandy Barnes through TCOYD’s conferences held in Raleigh.  At the 2009 TCOYD Raleigh conference, the two nonprofits organized a small reception for women with all types of diabetes to come together after the conference to talk, share experiences and meet one another. It became abundantly evident to both organizations that women with diabetes are looking for information and empowerment specific to the experience, challenges and issues they face as women living with diabetes.  The idea of a retreat tied onto the established educational strength of a TCOYD conference was born.  Nurtured through Ms. Barnes persistance and the encouragement of esteemed medical professionals who serve as volunteer faculty for both DiabetesSisters and TCOYD, as well by the people we serve (both men and women), we are thrilled to announce the the 2010 Weekend for Women, hosted by Diabetes Sisters and TCOYD.

Weekend for Women participants will attend educational sessions on gender-specific topics related to diabetes treatment and care (such pregnancy, body image, menopause, nutrition), speak one-on-one with other women who are living successfully with diabetes, receive unbiased information on the emergence of new equipment and medications, and learn new tactics for improving their mental and physical health.  Participants will also relax and rejuvenate on Saturday evening through a session in the “Sweet Suite.”  To kick off the educational sessions on Sunday, the seated breakfast will feature an entertaining and inspirational speaker, who shares something from her own experience of living with diabetes.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to informing and empowering people with diabetes to become actively involved in their own health care.  TCOYD does this through live national conferences, local events, publications, online resources and their own educational television series.  Each year TCOYD has the opportunity to spark a new understanding and a new energy in thousands of people living with this disease.

DiabetesSisters is a North Carolina based non-profit health organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of women with, and those as risk of developing, diabetes; and advocating on their behalf.  The vision of DiabetesSisters is to provide a centralized location for women with diabetes around the world to come together to support and empower each other while also sharing practical, useful information about the disease and its treatment in order to improve overall health and quality of life.
