Charlie Kimball
IZOD Indy Car Driver

Charlie Kimball is a race car driver forging a career in the highly competitive world of open wheel racing. Kimball, who began racing go-karts at age 9, was accepted into Stanford University and chose to bypass admission to follow his dream of becoming a race car driver.

In 2007, Kimball was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was forced to abandon his racing program midseason. Remarkably in 2008, Kimball returned to the cockpit and claimed a podium finish in his first race back in the car.

Today, Kimball continues to compete in one of the most competitive racing series in the world, proving that living with diabetes does not have to restrict him from traveling at speeds of nearly 240 miles an hour and fulfilling his dream.

In fact, he has partnered with Novo Nordisk, a global health care company dedicated to diabetes care, to raise awareness of the importance of properly managing blood glucose levels and to demonstrate that when properly managed, diabetes can be successfully integrated into your life and ambitions.

In late 2010, Novo Nordisk announced sponsorship for Charlie Kimball as a new entry in the 2011 IZOD INDYCAR Series, making him the first licensed driver with type 1 diabetes in the history of INDYCAR to race at the highest level of the Series. Kimball’s goal as he competes in 2011 is to capture Rookie of the Year honors at both the Indianapolis 500 and for the IZOD INDYCAR Series, making him the first person with diabetes to accomplish the feat.

Prior to this achievement, Kimball had a history of breaking the mold. In 2005, he became the first American in 13 years to win a British Formula 3 race. He went on to secure two track records and several Formula 3 victories in both Britain and Europe. Kimball has also raced in the Formula 3 Euro Series, the World Series by Renault and the Firestone Indy Lights Series.
