World Diabetes Day Brings Diabetes Awareness to the Forefront of the World’s Major Health Issues

The word “awareness,” no matter what language, is used frequently in our lives and is defined by the ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events or situations. Many causes have awareness days or months that bring specific issues into focus. These profound reminders of solidarity and support represent the hope for a cure, the remembrance of a friend or loved one, or just the simple fact that these conditions affect the lives of millions and there is something we as a community can do to help.

WDD10.gifOn November 14th, people are standing together for a cause that affects the lives of nearly 250 million people around the globe. This is a cause we share as the diabetes community—a cause close to our hearts. Whether you are a type 1, type 2 or even type 3 (family member, loved one or friend), this month gives you the opportunity to speak out and to let the world know that diabetes is a chronic condition that is not only difficult to manage, but can affect anyone, anytime no matter where you are from or what your socioeconomic status is.

On this special day, people around the world will come together to bring diabetes front and center. It’s complications, impact, reach and worldwide significance will serve as an alarming reminder that diabetes has been and continues to be the silent pandemic that affects the lives of those close to us. Thousands of cities will participate in festivities including the lighting of buildings and monuments in blue lights—the color that commemorates diabetes awareness. Many will wear the blue circle pin, representing diabetes awareness, life and health. The color blue itself reflects the sky that unites all nations. When put together, the blue circle signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic.

At TCOYD, we feel that, equally important to awareness, is education. To carry on the message and principles of World Diabetes Day, TCOYD continues to provide cutting-edge diabetes education and empowerment to thousands of people across the country who are living with the disease day after day, year after year. This is why we, as a team, will stand in solidarity on November 14th and wear the blue circle and our TCOYD pin to proudly to show that awareness, coupled with education, creates empowerment and control. In addition to that, we will be lighting our office sign blue, complete with our World Diabetes Day banner.

In honor of this day, let’s all stand together as one and show the world that although diabetes is a growing pandemic, we can work to empower and educate everyone, no matter where they are from, about diabetes and its impact on society.
