Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference Returns to Milwaukee September 19th bringing Answers, Advocacy and Hope for People with Diabetes

In partnership with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Diabetes Care Center in Milwaukee, the not-for-profit Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) will hold its critically acclaimed conference for people living with diabetes on September 19, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Midwest Airlines Center. The TCOYD conference, lunch and health fair brings national and local medical experts in diabetes care to people with all types of diabetes, those at risk for diabetes, and their loved ones for a day of highly informative and motivational programs. Leading specialists will discuss practical advice and developments in the treatment of diabetes, the complications of the disease, psychological barriers to controlling diabetes, nutritional issues and much more.

“It is my conviction that health care in this country will improve when the people living with diabetes themselves are informed and empowered to take an active role in their own condition,” said TCOYD founder and director Steven Edelman, MD.
Edelman, 2009 recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s prestigious Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award, and internationally recognized leader in diabetes treatment, was himself diagnosed with type I diabetes at age 15.

A health fair with 50 informational exhibits from national and local diabetes-related companies and organizations will be open throughout the day. Lunch is included and will feature special guest speaker Phil Southerland, professional cyclist and founder of Team Type 1, recent winning team of the 2009 Race Across America (RAAM). Mr. Southerland will share his personal story of living and competing with type 1 diabetes.

“When the TCOYD program was first held here in 2007, it inspired so many of my patients to stay on top of the daily challenges of diabetes, to ask questions and stay active in their health care,” conference codirector Paul Knudson, MD (Director, Froedtert & the Medical College Diabetes Care Center, Milwaukee) said. “Education and empowerment is critical to overcoming this disease, and this conference arms the diabetes patient with the tools to fight back, and maintain the momentum of good care.”

More than 1500 people are expected to attend the event.

Pre-registration is recommended and financial aid is available for those who need assistance. Early registration fee is $25 per person, before September 16. The registration fee includes lunch, healthy snacks, and all conference activities and materials. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE BY CALLING TCOYD. Onsite registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and costs $30. The conference is from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To register or get more information, call 800-998-2693 or visit www.tcoyd.org.
