*Steven V. Edelman, MD
TCOYD Founder & Director

Dr. Edelman is the founder and director of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System of San Diego. He is also the director of the Diabetes Care Clinic at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Edelman, who has type 1 diabetes himself, has written more than 200 articles, five books, and has won numerous awards for teaching and humanitarianism. He has been chosen by the medical students at UCSD as the ‘teacher of the year’ numerous times. Among his many honors, Dr. Edelman has received the ‘Diabetes Educator Of The Year’ award by the American Diabetes Association, the ‘Distinction in Endocrinology’ award by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and named ‘Top 1% of U.S. Endocrinologists’ by US News and World Report.

William Polonsky, PhD, CDCES
Clinical Psychologist; Founder & CEO, Behavioral Diabetes Institute

Dr. Polonsky is President and Founder of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the world's first organization totally dedicated to studying and addressing the unmet psychological needs of people with diabetes. He is also Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Polonsky received his PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University and has served as Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, faculty member at Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. A licensed clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator, he received the American Diabetes Association’s 2014 Richard R. Rubin Award for distinguished contributions to behavioral medicine and psychology. Dr. Polonsky’s most recent research projects have focused on quality of life in diabetes, diabetes-related distress and depression, hypoglycemic fear, and glucose monitoring behavior and attitudes in people living with diabetes.

*Irl B. Hirsch, MD

Dr. Hirsch is a professor of medicine and holds the Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He completed medical school at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO, trained in internal medicine at the University of Miami in Miami FL and Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, FL, and completed a research fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. From both a research and teaching point of view, Dr. Hirsch’s career has focused on studying the best strategies for the use of insulin therapy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, innovations in technology for diabetes management. More recently, he has become involved with artificial pancreas technology. The management of hyperglycemia in the hospital has been an interest of Dr. Hirsch for over 25 years. With regard to patient care, the majority of patients in his practice have type 1 diabetes or unusual forms of diabetes.

*Sean Busby
Champion Snowboarder

Sean Busby is a professional snowboarder and founder of the non profit Riding On Insulin. In February 2014, Sean became the first person with T1D to backcountry snowboard all seven continents and one of the youngest to do so. His expeditions include trips to Morocco, Antarctica (twice!), Patagonia, Iceland, Norway, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Alaska, Tasmania, and more. Sean and his wife, Mollie, have been featured on HGTV and the DIY Network for their hand built off the grid homestead in Northwest Montana where the live with their three dogs, sixteen chickens, seven ducks, three turkeys, and one rabbit.

*Chef Robert Lewis
Chef

Chef Robert Lewis graduated from the Prestigious Culinary Institute of America in 1976. In 1998 he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Thus began his motivation to create great tasting dishes that are easy to prepare. Chef Robert is a nationally recognized author, public speaker and spokesperson for all people affected with diabetes. He travels the country speaking on the benefits of healthy eating not only for people affected with diabetes, but also for anyone who would like to eat and live a healthy lifestyle. Robert has worked with Al Roker, Ben Vereen, Richard Simmons, Ann Curry, Indy car racer Charlie Kimble, The Amazing Race Winner Nat Strand and many others! He's also been been featured in Diabetes Health Monitor, Diabetes Health magazine, USA Today, The Radish and Diabetic Living Magazine and more. Carol Wysham, MD
Section Head, Rockwood Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology

Carol Wysham, MD graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, IA, in 1980 and did her internship in internal medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland in 1983. She had a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, IA, from 1983 to 1986. She was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota between 1986 and 1992. During that time she was also Chief, Endocrinology and Metabolism, at the Ramsey Clinic in St. Paul. Currently, she is Section Head of the the Rockwood Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology in Spokane, WA, and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is also Chair, Washington State Diabetes Collaborative.
