*Steven V. Edelman, MD
TCOYD Founder & Director

Dr. Edelman is the founder and director of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System of San Diego. He is also the director of the Diabetes Care Clinic at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Edelman, who has type 1 diabetes himself, has written more than 200 articles, five books, and has won numerous awards for teaching and humanitarianism. He has been chosen by the medical students at UCSD as the ‘teacher of the year’ numerous times. Among his many honors, Dr. Edelman has received the ‘Diabetes Educator Of The Year’ award by the American Diabetes Association, the ‘Distinction in Endocrinology’ award by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and named ‘Top 1% of U.S. Endocrinologists’ by US News and World Report.

Schafer Boeder, MD
Type 2 Track Co-Director, Endocrinologist, Assistant Professor of Medicine, UCSD School of Medicine

Schafer Boeder, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist who diagnoses and treats people with a variety of endocrine conditions, with a particular focus on diabetes. His research is focused on new medications, devices, and technologies to help patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. He is active in patient education through organizations such as Taking Control of Your Diabetes, where he speaks on topics such as current and future therapies for diabetes.  Dr. Boeder was chief fellow during his endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. He is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

Ian Blumer, MD, FRCPC
Endocrinologist, Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre, University of Toronto

Dr. Blumer is an endocrinologist in Toronto, Canada. He is a director of the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre, a lecturer at the University of Toronto, and is Chair of the Endocrine Society Diabetes and Pregnancy Clinical Practice Guideline Task Force. Dr. Blumer has been awarded the Canadian Diabetes Association’s highest clinical honor, the Gerald S. Wong Award, given in recognition of outstanding service and contribution to people living with diabetes; and has been the recipient of the Professor M. Viswanathan Gold Medal Oration Award. Dr. Blumer has delivered lectures across the Americas as well as in Europe and Asia including presenting at scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association, the International Diabetes Federation, the Endocrine Society, the Hong Kong Geriatrics Society, the Chinese Society of Endocrinology, the Emirates Diabetes Society, and the Canadian Diabetes Association. In addition to his scientific publications, Dr. Blumer has authored 9 books including works on diabetes, cooking with diabetes, prescription drug therapy, celiac disease, and doctor-patient relationships.

William Polonsky, PhD, CDCES
Clinical Psychologist; Founder & CEO, Behavioral Diabetes Institute

Dr. Polonsky is President and Founder of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the world's first organization totally dedicated to studying and addressing the unmet psychological needs of people with diabetes. He is also Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Polonsky received his PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University and has served as Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, faculty member at Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. A licensed clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator, he received the American Diabetes Association’s 2014 Richard R. Rubin Award for distinguished contributions to behavioral medicine and psychology. Dr. Polonsky’s most recent research projects have focused on quality of life in diabetes, diabetes-related distress and depression, hypoglycemic fear, and glucose monitoring behavior and attitudes in people living with diabetes.

Chef Robert Lewis graduated from the Prestigious Culinary Institute of America in 1976. In 1998 he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Thus began his motivation to create great tasting dishes that are easy to prepare. Chef Robert is a nationally recognized author, public speaker and spokesperson for all people affected with diabetes. He travels the country speaking on the benefits of healthy eating not only for people affected with diabetes, but also for anyone who would like to eat and live a healthy lifestyle. Robert has worked with Al Roker, Ben Vereen, Richard Simmons, Ann Curry, Indy car racer Charlie Kimble, The Amazing Race Winner Nat Strand and many others! He's also been been featured in Diabetes Health Monitor, Diabetes Health magazine, USA Today, The Radish and Diabetic Living Magazine and more. Robert Busch, MD, practices Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism in Albany, NY at Endocrine Group. Dr. Robert Busch received his B.A. from Brandeis University,and his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He served his Internship, Residency,and was Chief Medical Resident at North Shore University Hospital,prior to his endocrinology fellowship at Albany Medical College

Diabetes Nurse Specialist, Certified Diabetes Educator

Connie is Owner/Director of Healthy Diabetes Concepts in Schenectady, NY. She has a long career in community based mental health nursing offering holistic wellness counseling & support, eventually earning a MSN Clinical Specialty in Diabetes Nursing, Education, and Program Management from Capella University. She is a contributing author for My Sweet Life: Successful Women with Diabetes; writes about various diabetes topics for the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) publications as a contributing editor, author, and presenter, most recently for the AADE Advanced Practice Certificate: Managing Diabetes Complications on neuropathies and neuropathic joint disorders. Connie is a founding member of the Diabetes Women of Wisdom Collective and Annual Self-Care Retreat www.diabetesretreats.org. She also serves as a peer support DiabetesSisters PODS Leader for the Albany area, and is a member of T1DExchange Patient Advisory Committee. She has lived with T1 diabetes since early childhood.

Alicia is from Albany and used her diabetes diagnosis to better the lives for all people living with the disease. She founded Circle of Life Camp for kids with diabetes, has been vice president for lifestyle management at the ADA and is currently vice president for the patient-centered research T1D Exchange.
