Brittany Carney is the Executive Director and Director of Marketing for Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (TCOYD), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating, motivating, and empowering people living with diabetes. In her leadership role, she helps guide the organization’s strategic vision, digital communications, and worldwide impact to strengthen support for people with diabetes.
… Known for being a hard worker, master motivator, and exceptional communicator, Brittany plays a critical role in securing the funding and support that make TCOYD’s educational programs possible, while ensuring the fabulous TCOYD team is putting their best foot forward. Her leadership has been pivotal in expanding the organization’s educational reach, building strong industry and community partnerships, and ensuring the sustainability of TCOYD’s mission. Dr. Jeremy Pettus is an endocrinologist, diabetes researcher, and nationally recognized educator who serves as the Continuing Medical Education Director and Director of the Type 1 Diabetes track for Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (TCOYD). In these roles, he helps shape the organization’s accredited continuing medical education programming while delivering practical, cutting-edge education to people living with diabetes and healthcare professionals alike.
… Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 15, Dr. Pettus brings both professional expertise and lived experience to everything he does. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Diego, where his clinical and research work focuses on innovative therapies for diabetes, including novel medications, diabetes technologies, artificial pancreas systems, and islet-based approaches. In addition to his educational leadership, Dr. Pettus is a key on-screen presence for TCOYD, acting in and starring in many of the organization’s educational and promotional videos. Known for his relatable style, quick wit, and ability to simplify complex topics, he helps make diabetes education engaging, approachable, and memorable for audiences around the world. Through TCOYD, Dr. Pettus travels nationally and internationally to educate and inspire people with diabetes, caregivers, and clinicians — translating the latest science into real-world strategies that empower individuals to live healthier, fuller lives.

Her role helps ensure that TCOYD’s programs, blog posts, newsletters, and other communications are informative, uplifting, and accessible to the diabetes community.

Dr. Schafer Boeder is a board‑certified endocrinologist, diabetes researcher, and Co‑Director of the Type 2 Diabetes track for Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (TCOYD). In this role, he brings his clinical expertise and research experience to TCOYD’s educational programs and presentations, helping people with diabetes understand the latest therapies, technologies, and management strategies.
An active clinical investigator, Dr. Boeder’s research centers on new medications, diabetes technologies, and innovative treatment approaches for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes — helping advance care and improve outcomes. He has contributed to numerous peer‑reviewed publications and educational initiatives in the field.
Dr. Boeder’s expertise in diabetes, combined with his passion for education and patient‑centered care, makes him a trusted voice in delivering accessible, practical guidance at TCOYD events and in educational materials that empower people living with diabetes and their care teams worldwide.
WILLIAM POLONSKY, PhD, CDCES
Behavioral Diabetes Expert & Faculty

Dr. Bill Polonsky is a leading expert in the behavioral and emotional aspects of diabetes and a valued faculty member for Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (TCOYD). He brings decades of research, clinical experience, and compassionate education to TCOYD’s programs, helping people with diabetes and their care teams better understand and manage the psychological challenges that accompany this complex chronic condition.
With a PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University, Dr. Polonsky has held roles such as Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center and faculty at Harvard Medical School, and he has served as Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. A certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES) and highly cited research scientist, he has published extensively on topics like diabetes distress, hypoglycemia fear, emotional well‑being, and quality of life.
Dr. Polonsky’s influence extends beyond academia and clinical practice: he is the author of several books for people living with diabetes — including the widely acclaimed Diabetes Burnout: What to Do When You Can’t Take it Anymore— and co‑editor of key professional texts used by clinicians worldwide. His work emphasizes “evidence‑based hope,” empowering people with diabetes to live healthier, more confident lives by addressing both the mental and physical aspects of diabetes management.

Sandra “Sandy” Bourdette is the Co‑Founder and Executive Director Emerita of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (TCOYD), the nonprofit organization dedicated to educating, motivating, and empowering people living with diabetes. Sandy helped start TCOYD in 1995 and has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s mission, culture, and long‑term impact.
… As a trusted guide and mentor within the diabetes community, Sandy is known for her thoroughness, patience, warmth, and relational approach. Her deep understanding of TCOYD’s history and operations has helped set the organization on a stable foundation and foster lasting relationships with partners, supporters, and participants.
