Considering Supporting TCOYD? Did You Know There Are Many Ways to Give?

Every gift you make to Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) helps provide trusted diabetes education and support to people living with diabetes and those who care for them. While many of our supporters choose to donate online, there are several other giving options that may better fit your financial goals—and some may even provide you with additional tax advantages.

donate online

Making a secure online gift, whether as a one-time or a monthly contribution, is the quickest and easiest way to support our mission.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • Fast, secure, and convenient
  • Immediate tax receipt for your records
  • Monthly giving provides ongoing support throughout the year
  • TCOYD is a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

give by mail

If you prefer, you can mail a check directly to TCOYD. Many donors appreciate the simplicity of giving this way, especially when making year-end charitable contributions.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • Simple and familiar giving method
  • May be helpful when coordinating charitable giving with your financial planning

employer match

Did You Know Your Employer May Match Your Donation? Many employers offer matching gift programs for current employees, and some also extend them to retirees and spouses. That means your donation to TCOYD could be doubled—or even tripled—at no additional cost to you.

A quick search through your employer’s benefits portal or a conversation with your Human Resources department can tell you if your company offers a matching gift program. It’s one of the easiest ways to increase the impact of your generosity.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • Double or even triple your donation
  • No additional cost to you
  • Helps reach even more people living with diabetes
  • All that’s needed is a simple form from your company

Give via Your Retirement Account (IRA)

If you’re age 70½ or older, you may be eligible to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to TCOYD. Rather than withdrawing the funds yourself and then making a donation, direct your IRA custodian to send the gift directly to TCOYD. Within IRS limits, this contribution is excluded from your taxable income and counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (if applicable), making this a tax-efficient way to support TCOYD.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • May satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)
  • Qualified distributions are generally excluded from your taxable income, which may reduce your overall tax liability
  • Allows you to make a meaningful charitable gift without impacting your cash flow
  • A simple and tax-efficient way to support TCOYD

Donate Appreciated Stock

Giving appreciated stocks or other publicly traded securities can be one of the most tax-efficient ways to support TCOYD.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • May help you avoid paying capital gains tax on appreciated securities
  • Donors who itemize deductions may generally claim a charitable deduction for the fair market value of eligible long-term appreciated securities, subject to IRS limitations
  • Allows you to make a larger charitable impact with assets you already own

name TCOYD as a beneficiary

You can designate TCOYD as a primary or secondary beneficiary of your retirement account, life insurance policy, donor-advised fund, bank account, brokerage account, or other financial assets. It’s often as simple as completing or updating a beneficiary designation form. Consider gifting TCOYD a life insurance policy that is no longer needed by current beneficiaries.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • Easy to establish
  • No changes needed to your will or trust
  • Depending on your circumstances, beneficiary gifts may offer tax advantages for your estate and your heirs
  • Allows you to leave a lasting legacy while retaining full control of your assets during your lifetime

Leave a Gift Through Your Will or Trust (Bequest)

A bequest is a meaningful way to support future generations living with diabetes. By including TCOYD in your estate plan, you create a lasting legacy without affecting your finances today. To Facilitate planning for uncertain future estate value, consider naming TCOYD for a specific percent of your estate.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

  • Costs nothing during your lifetime
  • Charitable bequests may reduce the taxable value of your estate
  • Allows you to make a larger future gift than may be possible today
  • Helps ensure TCOYD can continue educating and empowering people with diabetes for years to come

If you’d like to learn more about any of these giving options or discuss making a gift to TCOYD, we’d be happy to help! Please reach out to Joe Carroll Manager of Donor Relations at joe@tcoyd.org or 858.755.5683, ext 109.

No matter how you choose to give, your generosity helps educate, empower, and improve the lives of people living with diabetes every day. Thank you for being part of the TCOYD family and for helping change lives through education.

Tax laws are subject to change, and every donor’s financial situation is unique. Please consult your financial, legal, or tax advisor to determine which giving option is best for you.
