Participate in a Clinical Trial to help Researchers Explore How Marijuana Affects People Living with Type 2 Diabetes
Dr. Pettus and his team at UCSD are looking for individuals who meet the study criteria and want to contribute to advancing our understanding of the effects of marijuana on Type 2 diabetes.
Why This Study:
While marijuana is known to increase appetite, people who use it regularly tend to have lower cholesterol, healthier body weight, and are less prone to developing diabetes. With marijuana now legal in most US states, millions of people with diabetes are using marijuana products. However, there’s a significant gap between how many people are using marijuana and what we know about its effects on metabolism and diabetes. This study aims to close that gap.
Study Overview:
- 10 study visits over 3 months
- Participants receive both marijuana and placebo for 2-week periods each (random order)
- Marijuana provided by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for research purposes
- We’ll measure insulin sensitivity, weight, cholesterol profile, and glucose metabolism
- Compensation provided for time and travel at each visit
Eligibility Requirements:
- Ages 21-70
- Type 2 diabetes diagnosis
- Not currently on insulin
- Not regular marijuana users
