The CGM Dating Game: Helping You Find the Perfect CGM for Your MiniMed™ 780G System
Three CGMs. Which one will make the connection? Watch Dr. Pettus play “The CGM Dating Game” to see which continuous glucose monitoring device makes the perfect partner.
Direct from TCOYD Studios, we are excited to introduce “The CGM Dating Game.” Instead of awkward dating small talk, we’ve got sensors competing for a long-term relationship with the MiniMed™ 780G automated insulin delivery system. In this edutainment special, Dr. Steve Edelman hosts while Dr. Jeremy Pettus looks for his “perfect CGM match.” Behind the laughs you’ll also understand how today’s continuous glucose monitoring devices pair with the MiniMed™ 780G system so you can find a setup that fits your lifestyle.
Meet Your CGM Matches
Over the years, continuous glucose monitoring devices have evolved. Whether you’re a person with diabetes, a caregiver, or a clinician trying to keep up with the rapid-fire evolution of CGM, this video offers a fun way to compare options for the MiniMed™ 780G system so you can have a more informed conversation about what might be right for you. Here’s what you need to know.
MiniMed™ 780G system
The MiniMed™ 780G provides automated insulin delivery every five minutes to smooth highs. The 780G system now works with multiple CGM options, providing more freedom.
Instinct sensor (made by Abbott)
This next-gen option simplifies life with longer wear and fewer insertions. With Instinct sensor, you get up to a 15-day wear with a small and discreet device. One-handed insertion makes it easy to put it on, it only takes one hour to warm up, and no overtape required. When used with the MiniMed™ 780G system, this is the lowest maintenance option.
Simplera Sync™ sensor
This streamlined sensor is made for people who are looking for easy-to-use and small. It’s about the size of a quarter, can be inserted with one hand, has a two-hour warm-up period, a six-day wear time plus a 24-hour grace period, and requires no overtape. If you are looking for all-in-one insertion, you can time this 7 day sensor change with the 7 day MiniMed™ 780G infusion set.
Guardian™ 4 sensor
Guardian™ 4 is the veteran in the lineup. Guardian™ 4 has been around for a while and boasts well established integration and reliability. While newer sensors push convenience and wear-time, Guardian™ 4 helped pave the way for automated insulin delivery and remains a familiar option for many long-time users.
These options show how far CGM tech has come, highlighting even more customization for different personalities and diabetes management styles.

This was a fun way to explain the different CGM’s available for the 780G medtronic pump. Does the Instinct require a software update on the pump? Can you read it on the pump or is it only compatible with a phone? Thanks.
It will require an update for sure. You should get the details on their website.
Medtronic tech support told me a software update to the 780G IS required and is not available yet. No date given. No date when the Instinct will be available. I have 1 out of 3 Guardian 4 sensors fail before the 7 day lifespan…
Gosh, what a pain…Medtronic should give you new ones to replace the bad ones. Hang in there.
I agree ,the G4 sensors are crap.
It would be helpful to have heard a cost, insurance coverage, accuracy and reliability comparison among the CGMs.
I currently wear Guardian 4.
There’s only so much we can cover in a short video, however, we did review all of the different devices in our speed dating video (https://tcoyd.org/automated-insulin-delivery-systems-comparison/). Most of the information about accuracy is online on their website, but in general all three are extremely accurate, otherwise we would not be promoting them on our site.
I wear the uardian 4. It took some time for me because other issues 1st, I have to depend on someone to set me up. It is hard to place. You need two hands for that. Also 2nd my concerns are. I had a problem with the adheasive I had to find another way to work with that. Whats the adheasive on the other two devices also. I would like to know the cost of them
The form factor for the Instinct and the Simplera are 10x better than the Guardian 4. You could ask your doctor for a sample of the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, which is the same as the Instinct, if you want to test the adhesive. But I feel you would do quite well with either of the other two systems…you won’t need nearly as much tape as with the Guardian 4.
I wear the 7 day infusion set. How can i make the instinct compatible with it?
The Instinct will be compatible because the CGM has nothing to do with the tubing. You should be able to use the 7-day no problem.
