2025 FORUM HOSTS

Dr. Edelman is a professor of medicine in endocrinology at UC San Diego and the VA Healthcare System. Living with type 1 diabetes himself, he has authored over 200 publications and five books, and is a nationally recognized educator and advocate. He’s received multiple honors, including ADA’s Diabetes Educator of the Year, AACE’s Distinction in Endocrinology, and was named among the top 1% of U.S. endocrinologists by U.S. News & World Report. In 1995, he founded the nonprofit Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) to empower people living with diabetes.

Dr. Pettus is an endocrinologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 15, he has dedicated his career to advancing care for others with T1D. His research focuses on innovative therapies, from disease-modifying medications and islet cell transplants to artificial pancreas technology. As a physician, researcher, and person living with T1D, he brings unique insight and passion to the TCOYD education team.

Kelly Close is the founder of Close Concerns, dedicated to improving understanding of diabetes, prediabetes, and weight-related conditions. She has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 35 years and is the author of more than 35 peer-reviewed publications, including the award-winning Targeting a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Kelly co-founded diaTribe.org, The diaTribe Foundation, and dQ&A, and serves as an editor of Clinical Diabetes. A frequent speaker at global forums like the Aspen and Milken Institutes, she has also served on multiple nonprofit boards focused on diabetes research, education, and advocacy.

CONTESTANTS/PANELISTS

Dr. Philis-Tsimikas is an endocrinologist and Corporate Vice President of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute. She oversees diabetes care across hospitals, clinics, and communities, and serves as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego. She is the founder of Project Dulce and Dulce Digital, pioneering programs for underserved populations. Her work focuses on digital health, team-based care, and clinical research to improve diabetes outcomes and reduce disparities—earning national recognition for innovation and impact in chronic disease management.

Dr. Frias is the Medical Director and Principal Investigator at Velocity Clinical Research in Los Angeles. He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his endocrinology fellowship at UC San Diego. With over 25 years in diabetes, obesity, and metabolism research, he has held academic positions at UC San Diego and the University of Colorado and has authored numerous publications in the field.

Dr. Gregory is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He completed his medical degree at the University of Tennessee and his fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Vanderbilt. His clinical and research focus is on type 1 diabetes, insulin resistance, and the metabolic and cardiovascular effects of insulin therapy. Dr. Gregory is actively investigating novel insulin delivery strategies, including hepatopreferential and oral analogs, to improve metabolic outcomes and reduce cardiovascular risk in people with diabetes.

Dr. Eiland is an Associate Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Medical Director of its endocrine telehealth program. She completed her medical degree and internal medicine residency at Emory University, followed by an endocrinology fellowship at UNMC. Dr. Eiland leads telehealth initiatives serving rural hospitals across Nebraska and Iowa and also focuses clinically on type 1 diabetes and diabetes technology. She serves in additional leadership roles at Nebraska Medicine, including Medical Director of Patient Experience and Physician Champion for Telehealth.
