Newly Diagnosed with Type 1? Here's Dr. Edelman's Biggest Tip!
It's really simple but SO important and can be a life-saving decision. Dr. Edelman's biggest recommendation if you have type 1 diabetes is to get a CGM - a continuous glucose monitor. It notifies you if your blood sugars are dropping or getting too high, and you can program it to alert you and also loved ones.111Mar 06, 2018 -

What Causes Type 1 Diabetes?
The bottom line is we don't really know what causes type 1 diabetes, but there are two things that come into play. 1) There is a genetic predisposition to the disease and 2) Something else occurs like a viral infection, or bacteria someone is exposed to, or something in the environment triggers the immune system to go awry and attack and kill beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin.4,1KMar 05, 2018 -

What Is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system goes awry (for reasons we don't entirely understand) and requires the use of insulin because the person can no longer produce it on their own.115Mar 05, 2018 -

Which Is Worse, Type 1 or Type 2?
Type 1 diabetes used to be a death sentence and type 2 diabetes was nothing to be too concerned about. A lot has changed over the years and both types have their challenges, but there is one shared determining factor that plays a big role in quality and length of life for both types.1,4KFeb 19, 2018 -

Am I At Risk If a Family Member Has Diabetes?
If you are related to someone who has diabetes, are you at a greater risk to develop it yourself? Dr. Edelman explains the genetic, ethnic and environmental risk factors that contribute to type 2 diabetes, and also shares whether or not heredity plays a role in developing type 1.173Feb 19, 2018 -

T1D: LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)

LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)
LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) is the most missed diagnosis in diabetes. It’s often initially diagnosed as type 2 because the loss of pancreatic beta cells is much slower than the more “traditional” form of type 1. We’ll explain the typical stages of the condition and share which tests can determine a type 1 diagnosis. LADA: A Whole LADA Misdiagnoses
LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) presents itself very differently than a “traditional” type 1 diabetes diagnosis in children. The loss of pancreatic beta cells is slower with LADA, so many doctors incorrectly diagnose it initially as type 2. Dr. Edelman and Dr. Pettus explain the different stages of LADA, what to look out for, what tests can confirm the diagnosis of type 1, and how to adjust to the natural progression of the disease.
