During this program, we’ve reviewed 5 most groundbreaking advances in Type 1 diabetes research for 2025. We’ve never been so hopeful about the progress in diabetes research!
  1. Cell Therapies – Approaches to islet cell transplant and beta cell transplants
  2. Immunotherapies – Therapies to prevent type 1 diabetes or delay the progression of T1D (like Tzield)
  3. Technology – Artificial pancreas and closed loop systems are almost here, including Continuous Ketone Monitors (CKM)
  4. Non-Insulin Medications – GLP1s and SGLT inhibitors to treat type 1 diabetes
  5. Gene Therapy Approaches – Eliminating the need for insulin with companies like Kriya Therapeutics
Which of these advancements is most exciting? Let us know in the comments!

  1. I have applied to the Vertex program twice but was denied because I was diagnosed with breast cancer Dr in 2016. Will this ‘non-cancer’ requirement be lifted ever?

    • For clinical trials, they typically exclude people with a history of cancer, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t be eligible when it’s approved.

  2. Unfortunately I have a super autoimmune body, I have to soak my CGM FOR 24 hours and even then the CGM Dexcom 6 does a fair job being 10-20 pts in range. Would I be a candidate for any of this new technologies? I have been T1 for 67 years!
    Thank you,
    Jane

  3. I’ve heard you say that the Freestyle Libre is now approved to be used with the Medtronic 780G pump but I’ve checked with my Endocrinologist, the local Medtronic rep and called the Freestyle 1-800 number and none of them know anything about it. Could you please give me some info about how to switch to using the Libre w/ 780G? I HATE the Guardian 4 that is currently the only CGM that works with the pump. Thanks so much, Ramona Downs

    • Hi Ramona,
The partnership between Medtronic and Abbott was recently announced, but Abbott’s sensor is not yet available to be used with the Medtronic pump. Hopefully it will be available soon, but it’s not out yet. We’re looking forward the new sensor options also!

  4. I would be most excited for the gene therapy. All sound good, but that one seems the best
Diagnosed at 74 with type 1. 79 now

    • We shall see…excited for the options and all the research happening in this space right now!

  5. Howdy sign up for the study. Was diagnosed at 5 and now 52. Type 1

  6. An artificial pancreas sounds wonderful or islet cell s either. I have been a type 1 diabetic since I was 18 . Now 74.I’m like someone else I’m not a huge fan of the Gurdian 4.
